O.K. Mill Swimming Hole

Over the river and through the woods to our grandmother’s house we used to go. Literally! She lived way out in Machias, Wa and we would pass over the O.K. Mill bridge to get there every time. A landmark that helps me find my way back to my childhood.

I spent the first day of Summer vacation reliving the joys of swimming under this treasured bridge that sits atop the Pilchuck River. There’s a decent sized parking area that can fill fast with locals on a hot day. A short path takes you right down to a sandy beach to lay out your picnic blanket and set up your fort for the day.

The water has varying depths which allows for fun for all ages. With a sandy bottom it’s very gentle on bare feet as well. Just be warned to not dive off of the bridge and to avoid swimming when the water levels are higher and the current stronger. The summer heat tames the Pilchuck rather quickly, but it is always best to be cautious.

Another fun thing to do here is to drop in with your tubes or rubber rafts and float down to another spot where you’ll leave a car. This is best done earlier in the summer so there are less shallows to walk through. It’s a great way to waste a day lazily floating downstream.

Location:

Corner of S Machias Rd and O.K. Mill Rd

(Drive over the bridge and parking is on the left)
